The mutual influence of Environmental Management Systems and the EU ETS: Findings for the Italian pulp and paper industry

The European Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) is designed to be a flexible and efficient mechanism to encourage carbon-intensive industries to reduce CO2 emissions cost-effectively. Similarly, Environmental Management Systems (EMSs) are well-established tools designed to improve the efficiency of the environmental performance of companies. Up to now, knowledge of the mutual influences of strategic planning, ETS management and EMSs is still incomplete, and their implications are not fully understood. This study tries to identify whether the involvement of a firm in the ETS with the adoption of an EMS favors the generation of corporate strategic synergies in terms of organizational management and environmental planning. Due to a relatively short time frame and the need for exploratory research, a multiple case study emerged as the most suitable approach. Hence various Italian pulp and paper companies involved in the EU ETS were interviewed and analyzed. We found that organizations that integrate ETS management and EMS tend to establish satisfactory standards and procedures that are relevant for environmental monitoring and compliance. However not all ETS-related activities are integrated into EMSs. In addition, despite some mutual synergies, these are not sufficient for determining corporate environmental planning.

Highlights

â–º The integration of ETS-related activities into corporate EMS is basically confirmed. â–º EMS are mainly in charge of carbon emission monitoring, reporting and verification. â–º Carbon market activities are assigned to qualified/administrative and finance staff. â–º Investments in environmental innovation appear already to be part of EMS programs. â–º To date, the EU-ETS has not been able to trigger further environmental investments.

The organizational virtuousness of strategic corporate social responsibility: A case study of the Sri Lankan family-owned enterprise MAS Holdings

Publication year: 2012

Relatively little is known about strategic corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Asian companies. In the post-tsunami period, the authors interviewed 23 senior executives at ten prominent companies in Sri Lanka. Nine of the companies responded to the tsunami with philanthropy based CSR initiatives. Interviews with three senior executives at the family-owned enterprise MAS Holdings revealed an explicitly strategic CSR approach. MAS Holdings, an apparel manufacturer owned by three brothers, is Victoria Secret’s lead strategic partner and an ethical buying source for other well-known apparel retailers. This paper examines the organizational virtuousness of MAS Holdings’ strategic CSR initiatives. The analysis uses Bright et al.’s (2006) conceptualization of organizational virtuousness in terms of the three dimensions of human impact, moral goodness and unconditional societal betterment. The case study findings for MAS Holdings illustrate how strategic CSR initiatives could be virtuous due to positive contributions to the community in those dimensions despite generating profits, publicity and reputation advantageous to the firm. While the empirical findings are limited to one company in Sri Lanka in the post-tsunami period, the paper discusses the broader implications of and directions for future research into the organizational virtuousness of strategic CSR.

Highlights

► We examine the organizational virtuousness of MAS Holdings’ strategic CSR initiatives. ► The analysis uses Bright, Cameron, and Caza’s (2006) conceptualization of organizational virtuousness. ► Findings illustrate how strategic CSR initiatives could be virtuous despite generating outputs advantageous to the firm.

Are firms with different CSR profiles equally innovative? Empirical analysis with survey data

  • PDF
Available online 4 August 2012
Publication year: 2012
Source:European Management Journal

This paper explores the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and innovation from a firm strategic perspective. Matching Community Innovation Survey data with specific data collected about the CSR behaviour of Luxembourg firms, the authors identify two types of firms (strategic versus responsive) that differ in the intensity of their CSR adoption. A bivariate probit model, estimated to explain the different types of technological innovations (product and/or process), shows that firms with strategic CSR profiles are more likely to innovate in both products and processes. In contrast, adopting responsive CSR practices significantly alters firms’ innovation, such that CSR may create barriers to innovation. These results have implications for theory and offer managerial recommendations for firms designing their innovation strategies.

Highlights

â–º Improve the understanding of the relationship between CSR and innovation. â–º Provide readers a better insight on strategic versus responsive CSR. â–º Test this relationship using firm level data. â–º Showing that the adoption of strategic CSR is key for both product and process innovations.

Pessimistic Futures Generation for Pessimistic Future Generations? The Youth has the Future but the Older has the authority

In this paper the German-Hungarian international representative comparative youth surveys have been used as basic reference points (15-24 years old youth, 1984/1985). The social changes in the last decade have had a dramatic effect on both Hungarian and German society, which is represented by university students’ opinion as well (1985-2000). The civilization theory of Margaret Mead proved to be a useful principle in interpretation for the common European youth cultural style. At the radical social changes, common high pessimistic characteristics can be found in the relation of the future-orientation and generations’ attitude scale of German and Hungarian youth. In the 10-15 year period after the political system change significant difference can be observed in the future-orientation of German and Hungarian youth attitude. In this paper we discuss detailed the connection between the pessimistic youth attitude and its effect on sustainable development. We argue that sustainable development can be imagined only if the optimistic youth attitude has effect on the negative demographical changes in Europe. Our goal was to discover new life sentiments which can be detected from the opinions of today's Hungarian youth. According to our hypothesis, young people experience the enlarging process of EU as peripheral participants representing that both the optimistic and pessimistic youth attitude equally refuse to grow up more children in family, which suggest that the sustainable development is not in the focus of their future orientation.

Highlights

â–º Young people experience the enlarging process of EU as peripheral participants in Hungary. â–º Both the optimistic and pessimistic youth attitude equally refuses to grow up more children in family. â–º The sustainable development is not in the focus of young's future orientation. â–º Education is an economic sector which significantly increases the demand of society for qualified workforce. â–º The next generation, today's 10 year olds will enjoy the benefits of the EU.
